Tariff Update for Our US Customers
2026 Oct 19th
We know that changing tariff rules have created some uncertainty for our U.S. customers, so we wanted to provide a little clarity about how tariffs apply to orders from The Japanese Paper Place.
How Tariffs Are Applied
Although your orders ship from us in Canada, tariffs are based on the country of origin of the paper or product, rather than the country it is shipped from.
All of our papers, along with some of the other products we carry, originate in Japan and are currently subject to a 12.5% tariff when entering the United States. This also includes our packaged paper assortments, since the papers inside them originate in Japan.
Products with Different Tariff Rates
Not everything we sell is subject to the same tariff. Some examples include:
-
Our journals, which are bound in Canada
-
Pencils
-
Clips
-
Certain metal tools and products, including awls
Some products may fall under different tariff classifications and could be subject to a higher rate. We will do our best to flag these items when we are aware of them.
Shipping with FedEx
We are continuing to ship U.S. orders with FedEx, as we have found that the additional fees they charge on top of the tariffs are considerably lower than those charged by UPS.
Keeping You Up to Date
We continue to stay as up to date as possible on changing shipping and tariff policies so that we can help make ordering from Canada as straightforward as possible.
If you have questions about a particular product or upcoming order, please reach out to Tara and she will be happy to help.
Most of all, we are deeply grateful to be able to continue working with our loyal U.S. customers. Thank you for continuing to choose washi and for supporting The Japanese Paper Place.
