Gampi is made from the inner bark of the gampi bush which must be obtained in the wild. Japanese gampi is very shiny even after being formed into paper, and has a natural sized quality which prevents absorption. Some gampi fibre is imported from the Philippines and it is much less shiny and more absorbent than Japanese.
Mitsumata is also a bush from which the inner bark is isolated to make paper. Mitsumata paper often has more tone, and is very soft and absorbent. It takes 2 or 3 years to regenerate.
